Shifting Markets: Real-World Assets Just Caught Up to Bitcoin — In Nine Months

Today we released a report co-authored with Token Terminal that documents one of the largest trends in our industry: the shift of futures markets from crypto toward Real World Assets (RWAs). Just this July, RWA futures surpassed crypto futures by volume, showing a tremendous shift in the composition of futures markets. OKX was building alongside this data narrative, launching X perps and many RWA contracts over the October 2025 to July 2026 time frame in the report.

The report, "Shifting Markets: Real-World Assets Just Caught Up to Bitcoin — In Nine Months," breaks that shift into five findings. Next to OKX's own product timeline, they tell one story: OKX built the roadmap the market was about to need. The full report is linked here. Below are some summarized key findings:

The category kept rotating — and so did OKX's lineup

Between October 2025 and July 2026, the assets driving RWA futures didn't hold still. Indices led first, commodities took over in early 2026, and equities took the lead by July — a market that's constantly evolving, not settling into one lane.

OKX's own X-Perps lineup tracked that same rotation instead of picking a single bet: indices, commodities including WTI, and single-name equities X-perps, each going live as the data below shows it starting to matter.

Crypto took a hit in October. RWA didn't wait around.

A single day — October 10, 2025 — reset crypto futures trading, with reported liquidations exceeding $19 billion within hours. Nine months later, crypto contract volume remains well below its pre-reset level.

RWA contracts filled that gap from a near standing start: monthly volume rose from $760 million to $107.6 billion, a 142-fold increase, with volumes slightly exceeding crypto for the first time. That window also spans OKX's launch and scaling of X-Perps in Europe.

Oil trades on oil news. So does OKX's WTI contract.

When strikes on Iran began in late February 2026, WTI contract trading volume jumped 149-fold in nine days, while bitcoin volumes barely moved — the report's cleanest evidence that these contracts move with the physical world, not crypto sentiment.

OKX's WTI listing sits in exactly that lane: a contract built to track oil markets directly, rather than offering a crypto proxy for it.

Chips became the new whales

Semiconductor and memory contracts — SK Hynix, Micron, SanDisk, a DRAM ETF — grew from $600 million to $45.3 billion in monthly volume as memory prices rose through Q2 2026. They now account for 72% of single-name equity trading volume in the category.

Liquidity matures as markets do

Before a company lists, its RWA futures market tends to skew one way: retail goes long, institutions go short. The SpaceX contract showed it clearly: on some days, just ten short positions accounted for 80% of all short interest. That imbalance narrowed sharply once the shares started trading publicly.

It's a pattern worth watching as more assets move from private to public, and from off-chain to on-chain.

RWA isn't a trend anymore. It's the market.

Nine months ago, RWA futures were a rounding error next to crypto. By July, the category was doing $107.6 billion a month — narrowly exceeding crypto. OKX has helped drive that market: We offer X-Perps, Pre-IPO, stocks, and indices in eligible markets.

RWA is here to stay. And it's on OKX.
