On paper, SpaceX's earnings report looked outstanding. Yet $SPCX dropped more than 6% after hours.
Why?
The market is focused on two major concerns:
1️⃣ Massive AI spending
Quarterly capital expenditures surged to $18.37 billion, more than 6x higher than a year ago, with $15.8 billion directed toward AI infrastructure. Right now, investors are highly sensitive to rising AI capex, especially after the semiconductor sector's volatility earlier this year.
2️⃣ A huge share unlock
On August 6, approximately 911.5 million shares become eligible for sale. With only about 640 million shares currently in the public float, this represents a significant increase in potential supply. Meanwhile, short interest is already estimated at $24.6 billion, adding another layer of uncertainty.
Despite the post-market decline, the business fundamentals remain strong.
• Starlink continues to demonstrate improving profitability.
• The AI segment is reducing losses faster than expected.
• Revenue growth remains among the strongest in the industry.
The key question now isn't the earnings—it's whether the market can absorb the incoming supply.
What I'm watching:
• Can the market absorb selling pressure in the days following the unlock?
• If shares weaken, will long-term investors step in and accumulate?
For now, I'm staying patient. The earnings are behind us, but the market's reaction to the share unlock will likely determine the next major move.
