📊 Strategy ($MSTR) reported an $8.6B Q2 loss—but the headline needs context.
At first glance, the number looks alarming.
Here's the breakdown:
🔻 ~$8.3B came from unrealized Bitcoin losses. Because of accounting rules, declines in the value of its BTC holdings must be recognized even if no coins are sold.
💼 The company's software business generated $122M in revenue, while subscription revenue reportedly grew 54% year over year—a detail largely overshadowed by the Bitcoin accounting loss.
Despite the market volatility, Strategy continued accumulating, adding 84,000 BTC during Q2 and bringing total holdings close to 840,000 BTC.
That leaves investors debating what they're really buying.
The bull case:
✅ Massive Bitcoin exposure.
✅ Continued access to capital markets.
✅ Improving liquidity position.
The bear case:
⚠️ MSTR is effectively a leveraged Bitcoin proxy.
⚠️ Additional layers of debt and preferred shares increase financial risk.
⚠️ Returns depend on more than just Bitcoin's price.
If your goal is leveraged exposure to Bitcoin, $MSTR may fit that thesis.
If you simply want exposure to Bitcoin itself, holding $BTC directly remains the cleaner and simpler approach.
