#HormuzDealHitsHurdles
Iran and Oman have reached a preliminary understanding on coordinates for a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, but the proposed arrangement faces serious execution problems. Iran may seek control over Gulf-bound traffic, while possible tolls create sanctions and payment risks. Shipowners must also deal with expensive war-risk insurance and uncertainty over new transit rules.
The discussion has therefore shifted from whether an agreement can be announced to whether commercial vessels can legally and safely use it. In my view, oil prices may remain volatile until physical shipping data confirms a sustained recovery. A signed statement will mean little if insurers refuse coverage or companies cannot make permitted payments. Investors should monitor tanker movements, insurance premiums, sanctions guidance, and Iran’s parliamentary decisions. Continued restrictions could keep oil and inflation elevated, complicating the outlook for equities, crypto, and Federal Reserve policy.
