Most people are watching Bitcoin. I'm watching the bond market.
One chart is quietly putting pressure on every risk asset—including crypto.
The 30-year Treasury yield just hit 5.27%, its highest level since 2007.
When "risk-free" money is paying north of 5%, every risk asset has to earn its place in portfolios all over again.
JPMorgan has now pulled its Fed hike call forward from H2 2027 to this December, while also raising its end-2026 yield targets. The 10-year is now projected around 4.85% (up from 4.70%) and the 30-year around 5.40% (up from 5.20%).
The Fed held rates steady in July, but three officials dissented in favor of a hike, and the market is now pricing in the possibility of one as soon as September.
Here's what many headlines miss: this isn't just about the Fed. The long end is rising because investors are demanding a higher term premium for growing US fiscal risk. Expected fiscal expansion is widening the deficit, while a wave of Big Tech bond issuance is competing for the same pool of capital. Those are slower, stickier forces than any single Fed decision.
Two developments are pushing in the opposite direction:
US-Iran talks sent oil down more than 7% intraday, easing one of the biggest inflation pressures.
US-Japan yen intervention adds another layer, as Japan selling Treasuries to fund it could put even more upward pressure on yields.
Now for the part that matters to crypto.
Despite bonds yielding over 5%, crypto hasn't rolled over. BTC is still holding around $63K, and US spot Bitcoin ETFs have now recorded four consecutive days of inflows, including roughly $132M on Friday.
The catch? BTC is still trading below its major moving averages, and many analysts see $65K-$70K as the key resistance zone that needs to be reclaimed before calling this a true reversal.
Right now, the market is caught in a real tug-of-war:
• "Risk-free" yields are pulling capital toward cash and bonds.
• ETF demand is quietly pulling capital back into Bitcoin.
