After a conversation with @jdetychey, I think I have a much better understanding of his position. I want to lay it out clearly and see if I’ve understood it correctly. The argument is that a very high percentage of ETH being staked could create unintended centralization pressures. Here’s the thesis 👇 If, for example, 50%+ of ETH becomes staked, the remaining holders could face a strong economic incentive to stake as well. Why? Because if you don’t stake, you potentially suffer dilution relative to those who do. As staking participation rises, users may increasingly favor the largest and most liquid staking options. That could mean more ETH flowing toward major LSTs and centralized staking providers. And that creates another problem: 🏦 Solo stakers may become less competitive. In many jurisdictions, staking rewards can create a tax liability even when the real economic return is modest. If the after-tax return becomes unattractive, some solo validators could eventually exit. That potentially pushes more ETH toward large staking providers. Then comes the bigger tail risk: 🚨 What happens when one staking entity becomes too large to fail? If a major LST or centralized staking provider controls a significant percentage of staked ETH, a serious compromise could create enormous systemic risk. In an extreme scenario, the Ethereum social layer could face pressure to fork the chain to recover from the damage. And there’s another concern: The social layer itself. If almost all ETH is staked, the pool of non-staked ETH holders becomes relatively smaller. Could that make it harder for the broader community to resist a sufficiently large centralized staking entity attempting to censor transactions or push an unwanted fork? For example, imagine a major staking provider taking an aggressive position during a dispute involving something like USDC.
