Two blocks in eight hours. Bitcoin’s main chain kept moving.
The BIP-110 minority chain emerged at block 961,632 when enforcing nodes rejected non-signaling blocks. It inherited Bitcoin’s full mining difficulty but only a fraction of its hashrate. Around the split, two-week signaling stood at 2.53%, far below the 55% threshold.
That threshold is also disputed. BIP-110 uses 55%, versus the 95% generally used by standard BIP9 deployments for permanent consensus changes.
The proposal would restrict large data payloads and some script structures for 52,416 blocks, about one year.
· Backers say it protects payment blockspace and reduces node burden
· Critics say fee-paying users should determine how blockspace is used
· The restrictions could affect Taproot-based designs such as BitVM and temporarily constrain future soft-fork paths
Even if activated, BIP-110 would not eliminate arbitrary data. Payloads could still be split or structured differently, making it a restriction rather than a ban.
If activated, UTXOs created before the activation height would be grandfathered. BIP-110 does not change Bitcoin’s 21 million supply cap or issuance rules. Its “Complete” status means the authors consider the specification finished and recommend adoption. It does not indicate network approval or deployment.
The mechanics now matter. Mining difficulty adjusts every 2,016 blocks, leaving a low-hashrate minority chain at risk of remaining stalled for an extended period.
Among chains a node considers valid, Bitcoin selects the one with the most cumulative proof of work. During the mandatory-signaling window, BIP-110 nodes exclude non-signaling blocks from that choice, while standard nodes continue following the dominant-work chain. The lack of replay protection also introduces transaction risks on the minority chain.
This is less a verdict on inscriptions than a live test of how Bitcoin reaches consensus. What does this episode reveal about where that consensus forms: through code, hashrate, or broader ecosystem adoption?
