How $190B Became $175B?

Capital expenditure decreased by $15 billion, but Microsoft hasn't reduced a single AI data center
Microsoft has adjusted its 2026 capital expenditure forecast from $190 billion to $175 billion, but the company clearly stated that the actual investment plan has not been reduced. The $15 billion decrease mainly comes from changes in asset lifespan and lease classification. The reduction from $190 billion to $175 billion is enough to reassure any investor worried about AI spending getting out of control. After Microsoft released its financial report, the market quickly focused on two figures. Azure revenue grew by 43%, while the company's latest capital expenditure forecast for the 2026 calendar year is $15 billion less than three months ago. Faster cloud growth combined with a lighter investment bill is almost the best combination Wall Street could hope for. Figure 1 | Wall Street first votes for revenue realization. After Microsoft's earnings report, the stock price rose about 15.5% in a single day, increasing market value by nearly $450 billion; during the same period, Azure revenue grew 43%. Investors received faster cloud growth and an apparently lighter capital expenditure bill. Data source: Microsoft, Reuters. The problem is, Microsoft has not actually spent $15 billion less. The company said quite directly during the earnings call: excluding accounting classification changes, the original capital investment forecast has not changed. Data centers still need to be built, servers still need to be purchased, and power and cooling systems have not disappeared from the construction plans. The change lies in how long assets are expected to be used and which section of the financial report related leases should be recorded in. This is not a story of spending cuts. At least not yet. What has decreased is the capital expenditure line
