Tether
Tether
Tether

Attention USDT holders.
On July 31, Tether released its Q2 attestation report.
The press was flooded with headlines: "Net operating profit of $1.5 billion, a new record!"
You might think: It's stable, USDT is making a lot of money, feel safe holding it.
But you might have missed the line in the financial report that really matters.
First, the shiny side:
Tether's Q2 net operating profit was $1.5 billion, nearly 50% growth from Q1.
Where did the money come from? U.S. Treasuries and repo operations.
USDT circulation is $184.6 billion, with a market share over 60%.
Global users surpassed 650 million, adding 30 million in one quarter.
Sounds like a money printing machine? It is.
Now, the other side:
Tether increased its gold holdings by 14 tons, with total holdings reaching 146.2 tons.
Bitcoin holdings also increased by 1,796 coins, totaling 98,933 coins.
And then?
Gold prices dropped 15%, Bitcoin fell from 68,200 to 58,600.
Tether's comprehensive financial result for the first half of the year was a loss of $3.17 billion.
Q2 alone may have recorded losses exceeding $4 billion.
Excess reserves halved from $8.23 billion in Q1 to $4.11 billion.
Translation: Tether earned $1.5 billion, but because the gold and Bitcoin they hold dropped in value, overall they lost $4 billion.
Your "safety cushion" in USDT shrank by half in three months.
What are excess reserves? It's the extra insurance Tether has beyond 100% backing for every USDT.
In Q1, this insurance was $8.2 billion.
By the end of Q2, only $4.1 billion remained.
This doesn't mean Tether is in trouble; it means the "stablecoin" reserves are becoming less stable.
Tether shifted reserves from pure U.S. Treasuries to a mix including gold and Bitcoin—
Is this diversification of risk, or introducing more volatility?
German asset management giant Union Investment warned long ago: Tether's reserve structure looks more like a high-risk hedge fund than a stablecoin.
Gold and Bitcoin can hedge dollar risk.
But they are risky assets themselves.
A coin claiming to be "stable" with half its reserves jumping up and down with the market—is that still stable?
You hold USDT thinking you're hedging risk.
But Tether takes your money to buy gold and Bitcoin to "take risks" for you.
If they profit, that's theirs (that's where the $1.5 billion profit comes from).
If they lose, whose loss is it? It's the $4.1 billion in your excess reserves.
What do you think the market will do when excess reserves hit zero?
My judgment:
Tether's fundamentals remain strong, and $4.1 billion in excess reserves is not a small number.
But the trend is worrisome:
If gold and Bitcoin keep falling, excess reserves will keep shrinking.
If excess reserves keep shrinking, market confidence in USDT will weaken.
This is not FUD, this is math.
