Switching direction 4 times in a month! From the "meat grinder" crude oil market, see how to buy the dip and sell the top
First, a question——
Are you still alive after going long on crude oil in July?
Bottomed out at the start of the month, chased the rally mid-month, cut losses on the 24th, broke your leg on the 29th, and felt despair again on the 31st——
This is the true portrait of crude oil traders in July.
It’s also very much like you right now.
Review this past month, and you’ll understand what a "meat grinder" really means.
At the beginning of July, oil prices hovered around $70. During the US-Iran agreement observation period, the market thought "it’s fine," and prices stabilized at a low level.
Mid-July, Iran attacked the US military base in Jordan, killing 2 US soldiers. Brent briefly broke through $90. Chase! Hurry and chase!
Around July 24, the mutual attacks paused, and WTI fell back to around $82. Cut losses, the geopolitical risk is over.
On July 29, Iran’s ballistic missiles attacked the US base in Jordan again, and the US airstrike hit northwest Iran. WTI surged 6.56% in one day, closing at $84.46; Brent surged 7.91%, back above $90.74.
Chase! This time it’s definitely a real breakout!
On July 30 and 31, prices fell consecutively. WTI lost $81, Brent hovered around $85.
Trapped again.
In one month, the US-Iran conflict "eased-upgraded-eased-upgraded" switched twice. Oil prices went from 70 to 90, then to 80, then back to 90, then 80——
4 direction changes. How many times were your stop-loss orders triggered?
Where’s the problem?
The crude oil market in July has completely abandoned supply-demand pricing logic.
Geopolitics has become the only protagonist.
On July 20, the Houthi militia announced a maritime embargo on Saudi Arabia.
On the week of July 24, Houthis attacked Saudi Red Sea oil tankers.
On July 29, the US military resumed large-scale airstrikes on Iran, lasting two hours.
On July 30, Iran claimed to have destroyed 3 F-35s. The war spread to Egypt, involving 14 countries.
Today (July 31), Hamas accepted a disarmament proposal, and the Middle East situation is expected to stabilize, with oil prices down about 9% for the week.
Do you understand now?
The news changes every day. Fight today, negotiate tomorrow, fight again the day after.
You chase the news—chasing the peaks.
What’s the harshest truth?
The head of energy research at DBS Bank said bluntly: "With the Middle East conflict fluctuating, Brent crude will fluctuate between $80 and $100 recently."
$80 to $100. A $20 range. Direction? No direction.
Options market data shows implied volatility for Brent and WTI crude has risen to the highest level since April. Oil market volatility is 3.2 times that of the VIX.
Translation: crude oil’s current volatility is three times crazier than the US stock market.
Goldman Sachs outlined three scenarios: baseline neutral (Brent at $80), extreme scenario (possibly breaking $120).
From $80 to $120, that’s a whole bull market difference.
Tell me, how do you bet on direction in such a market?
Map this to crypto, and think carefully.
Isn’t BTC now following the same script?
The CLARITY Act "text released → Democratic opposition → ongoing negotiations → recess approaching," news changes daily. BTC fluctuates repeatedly around $65,000.
You chase in today because of some positive news, and tomorrow a negative news knocks you back to square one.
Just like crude oil—without fundamental support, sharp rallies only hand money to the illiquid opposing side.
WTI’s 6.56% surge on the 29th lasted only 2 days before being knocked back.
If BTC surges sharply due to some positive news but fails to break previous highs with volume—referencing WTI’s pattern, that’s a short-term peak.
So what to do?
In this "easing and escalation" chaotic switching market——
The best strategy is not to bet on direction but to go long volatility.
Smart money is already doing this in the options market: September 85/86 and November 100/101 call spreads are heavily traded.
Or simpler—stay out of the market and wait for confirmation on the right side.
Guosen Futures said today: "Operation advice: temporarily wait and see."
If professional institutions don’t bet, what are you betting on?
Geopolitics only changes the rhythm of volatility, not the trend direction.
July crude oil played 4 fake breakouts.
The market makers want your stop-loss orders, not your dreams of getting rich.
When you chased highs yesterday, you thought "conflict escalated, better get on board quickly."
Today it falls, you think "there’s still hope to hold on."
But the fact is—the script hasn’t changed since the start of the month. Only your position and mindset have changed.
The US and Iran fight, you lose money.
They battle on the battlefield, you pay on the K-line.
