August 1st marked a rough start for the crypto market.
BTC fell below $63,000, with $362 million liquidated across the network, and over 90,000 people forcibly liquidated.
On the same day, Tether released its Q2 financial report——
Net operating profit of $1.5 billion.
USDT circulation reached 184.6 billion, with a market share exceeding 60%.
Record profits, top market share, and 30 million new users.
It looks rock solid.
But if you turn the page.
Excess reserves dropped from $8.23 billion in Q1 to $4.11 billion.
Cut in half. Straight cut in half.
Total assets fell from 191.7 billion to 187.7 billion. Liabilities barely changed.
More than $5 billion vanished from the books out of thin air.
Tether earned $1.5 billion, but its safety cushion shrank by $4.1 billion.
You tell me this is "stable"?
Where did the money go?
Tether didn’t say.
It only told you three things:
First, gold holdings increased by 14 tons, with total holdings exceeding 146 tons.
Second, Bitcoin holdings increased by about 1,800 coins, totaling 98,933 coins.
Third, both these asset classes dropped over 10% in Q2.
Gold fell from about $20 billion to $18.8 billion, Bitcoin from about $6.6 billion to $5.8 billion.
In plain language: Tether used your sense of security to buy the dip in gold and Bitcoin, but caught it halfway down the mountain.
Even stranger—Q1 report detailed the dollar amounts for each asset category: $141 billion in government bonds, about $20 billion in gold, about $7 billion in Bitcoin.
In the Q2 report, these three dollar figures disappeared.
Gold only says "over 146 tons," government bonds only say "make up the majority of reserves."
Why no numbers?
Because if they gave numbers, you’d know how much they lost.
There’s one more thing worth pondering.
USDT circulation is 184.6 billion, but the entire quarter only saw an increase of $446 million.
Almost no movement in a quarter.
The entire stablecoin market cap is shrinking, yet USDT grew by over $400 million against the trend.
But $400 million? For a company with over $180 billion in scale, that’s called "stagnation."
Is it that the crypto market is shrinking in volume and price, so no one uses stablecoins? Or is USDC eating into the market share?
Neither.
USDC circulation decreased by about 1 billion coins in the past week.
The whole market is contracting.
But the problem is—Tether’s users are still increasing by 30 million, and USDT’s market share remains above 60%.
More users, but circulation doesn’t rise.
What does this mean?
It means people hold USDT but don’t move it.
No buying coins, no transfers, no withdrawals.
Just holding, watching, waiting.
Tether earned $1.5 billion, you’re happy—thinking your USDT is safer.
But your sense of security is deducted from an $8.2 billion safety cushion.
They took your money to buy gold and Bitcoin, lost billions, then told you "it’s okay, we still have $4.1 billion in excess reserves."
Is $4.1 billion a lot?
For a company with over $180 billion in liabilities—
That’s called a "buffer," not a "safety cushion."
My judgment
Tether remains the world’s largest and most liquid stablecoin issuer.
But the biggest signal from this report isn’t "$1.5 billion profit," it’s "transparency is regressing."
A quarter ago they were flexing muscles, this quarter they started hiding numbers.
KPMG’s audit is still ongoing.
When the audit report comes out—
We’ll finally know where that $5+ billion really went.
